The key digital signage device, which is not that well known to most people, is the media player. This device decodes and sends the content to the screen. Starting with simple experiments using a conventional PC with software probably already available, such as Power Point and Windows Media Player, the idea is to let the reader explore the basics of digital signage. Then, different media player alternatives are introduced, such as software just being downloaded into conventional PC hardware and dedicated hardware, more set-top box like, media players.
The advantages and disadvantages of these alternatives are fully analyzed as well as whether to chose single-screen or multiple-screen media players. In addition, questions related to the different kinds of storage techniques in the media players are discussed along with available display interfaces and the how to choose between them.
