In chapter 5 the intention was to describe how different kinds of cable TV networks are designed. The content includes everything from traditional coaxial cable networks to combined fiber and coaxial (Hybrid Fiber Coax Networks). Also covered are satellite I.F. distribution networks and networks for redistributing digital TV signals originating from terrestrial transmitters. Different kinds of networks are compared and the advantages and disadvatages of each alternative is discussed. Modulation of the DVB transport stream is described as well as return channel traffic and the details about digital set-top boxes. Chapter 5 contains 14 illustrations of which 1 is in the color insert.
Digital cable television makes it possible to get the same content as in a complete satellite transponder into an 8 MHz channel that previously only distributed on analog channels. Today 8 to 10 TV channels in standard resolution may be housed within such a distribution channel. In addition to this, a noiseless picture is achieved in combination with improved audio.
